Fix or Buy?

Products that have sales and service tags attached to them are often controversial subjects. This is especially true of consumer electronics. Most laptops and cellphones are covered by warranties if consumers choose to pay for them. However, some do not prefer extended warranties. Also, many used products, such as those sold online via classifieds, don't cover warranties. So when they malfunction, the consumer is often left to decide whether to repair the existing product or buy a new one.

First of all, repairing electronics comes with its do's and don'ts. Some repairs are rather expensive and time-consuming, while others may take a few minutes. Screen replacement, whether in laptops, tablets or cellphones, takes a few minutes based on expertise. With new and used screens readily available on websites such as Amazon, eBay and Newegg, technicians may easily profit a certain percentage of the retail screen price while saving consumers a new laptop. Furthermore, if one has experience with DIY repairs, they may easily save even more. Not to mention, if one has a laptop with a broken screen, they may use a spare monitor using a VGA cable. Similarly, parts like RAMbatteriesCMOS battery, modem, touchpad, cooling fan, Modem/WI Fi cards, heat sinks, etc, may be cost-effective to replace than buying new. On the other hand, consumers prefer to buy brand new video cards like ATI Radeon and NVIDIA GeForce as external video cards for dual functions on both laptops and computers. To add, consumers may prefer a brand new hard disk rather than a repaired one, since hard disks are replaceable and have fewer compatibility issues. In contrast, iPhone screens and digitizers may cost consumers comparatively less compared to a new one. Whether one gets their supply from reputable sources like iFixit.com or a reputable dealer on eBay or Kijiji, replacing batteries for iPhone or Android is comparatively less expensive than buying a new phone. Not to mention, replacing speakers, microphone or evencamera piece may take a few minutes and save consumers a new phone. Also, a phone locked to a certain network may now be unlocked via its service providers for free or via third parties for a fee on holidays or after hours. However, a hardware malfunction or a damaged phone, either from water or from a blunt force impact in a fall, may require a new cell phone. Furthermorememory is another aspect of the phone that consumers look for storage and backup. A phone with less memory may be valued less than the same model with more memory. However, an SD card may easily resolve this issue by upgrading the cell phone memory. Also, accessories such as cases and battery chargers affect the resale value of the phone. Cell phones with original cases and battery chargers packed in a box are worth much more than a loose one without accessories. Overall, these are some aspects to consider while buying either a new or used phone when repair is no longer possible.

In conclusion, consumer electronics is a tricky business. Ultimately, it is up to the consumer to decide whether they would like to fix their electronics or go for a new one. Whether a phone is damaged or not, everyone needs a phone to communicate. If one cannot fix a cell phone, one will need to buy a new one, no matter what the circumstances may be. However, stolen devices are out of an ordinary scenario. Luckily, electronics may be insured not just under residential and commercial Insurance policies but also under Auto Insurance. Not to mention, certain kinds of cell phone damage may not be covered by warranties, but if this damage was caused by a third party, it might be covered under liability Insurance coverage. Thus, the electronics market is just like the stock market. One constantly needs to be aware and keep in touch with the market to profit from any transaction.
